St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, on December 9, 1579. He was the son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed slave from Panama. Facing prejudice for his mixed-race heritage, he began serving in menial tasks and was called the “Saint of the Broom.” He was later placed in charge of the infirmary, where he cared for the sick and impoverished with great devotion.
